If you’re the most interesting person in the room... you’re in the wrong room.
1 Insight is a podcast for the lonely leaders out there. You know who you are.
I have coached some of the most successful and talented people on the planet – from billion dollar business owners to former Navy Seals. I wrote a book for coaches that has sold over 50,000 copies, by word of mouth. And I'm the founder of a community of extraordinary top performers, called 4PC. Ultra-successful people are the ones who call me. My clients include Olympic athletes, Presidential candidates, Hollywood film directors, Special Forces operatives and serial entrepreneurs.
I see what most people cannot see – and I dare to say what most people would not say. And each week on this podcast, I will be challenging the thinking of high performers – from leaders in the corporate world, to successful entrepreneurs, to military veterans to high level coaches.
1 INSIGHT... because a single insight can change everything
Episode 2: A Diamond in the Rough
Daniel is a Police Officer. He's a man of deep faith. He's African American. He's a coach. And he's an athlete. And in this episode I tie all of these together, as I draw out his story and help him to craft the story of the NEXT stage of his life.
When he was young, Daniel's father said a few words to him, that changed his entire life.
And before we end, I say a few words to him that will help him create his life as a coach...
Episode 1: The Manifesto
Almost 10 years ago, one of my coaches shared with me a tool that has changed my life. I call it a Manifesto. It’s the tool I use to “create” myself every day.
I've been working on this for almost 10 years. I read to myself – sometimes out loud – almost every morning. I've shared with almost no one other than a handful of clients, over the years. And at my recent intensive, I took a risk and shared it out loud. And in this episode I am going to share my Manifesto with you...
A CREATED WORLD
The theme of this new podcast season is “A Created World.”
Most people live in a “Reported On World” – life happens to me… things are challenging… my wife is mean… my boss doesn't like me…
A few, rare people live in a “Created World.” Whatever happens, they are at choice how they respond to the world around them.
The Manifesto is a tool I have used to work on myself year, after year, after year, to create myself as the person I've become.
It's a never ending process because the person I am today is someone who's growing into the person I'll be tomorrow.
You’ll hear me get very moved at the end of this episode because I don't normally share this with anyone else.
So, enjoy this season, as I coach people around how they create themselves for what's coming next in their world and in their life.
Episode 10: "It's time for you to be a thought leader"
Vicki is a consultant to companies that range from start-ups to a $500 Billion corporation. What I see in Vicki is that with 20 years or more behind her of expertise in working with high-level leaders in organizations, it's time for her to start sharing her gifts. That looks like, it's time for her to be a thought leader.
In this conversation, I teach her 3 tools to draw out these gifts and insights that she has. I draw apart the two words: thought, leader. I help her understand how to get deeper into both of those. By the end, she is ready.
If you want to step into thought leadership, listen to this episode and start using these tools immediately. You are so much closer than you imagine. The world needs your message.
Episode 9: "I'm tired of being a best kept secret"
Mandy has a PHD from Cambridge University. She has been involved in investment banking for over two decades. She coaches high caliber clients in the world of private equity and investment banking.
And, she’s frustrated. She’s tired of being a best kept secret.
I ask a single question that takes us deeper and deeper and deeper into the solution of the struggle that Mandy’s in.
Episode 8: "The Four Stages of Transformation"
There are four stages of transformation:
Transmission is when you become a guide and start to help others to become heroes. Today I have a conversation with Hayden around how he steps into the highest level of transformation - the mastery level.
Sometimes as a coach your job is to simply create space and the clients will come to their own insights. And, that's precisely what happens in this conversation. And, I have mine too at the very same time.
Episode 7: "Stand out"
Laurie has never felt like she fit in. She didn’t fit in as a child, as an actress or as a successful copywriter.
Yet our biggest gifts often come from the place where we struggle the most. And today, I coach this incredibly creative woman to turn her struggle into her gift as a coach.
Bonus Episode: Leading Businesses Through Uncertainty
Vicki Shillington has over 20 years experience as an executive at a Fortune 50 firm. She's been a consultant at one of the "Big Five" accounting and consulting firms. She's built a reputation for leading transformation for Fortune 500 companies. She's an expert in positive psychology. And she's known for speaking her truth to high level leaders. Her clients include a $500 billion dollar corporation. And she's regularly called on to consult with start-ups (one of her passions).
Her company has created a model to lead businesses through the current economic uncertainty. She shared it with us in 4PC and blew us away with her thinking, her insights and her ideas. So, I asked her if she'd be willing to share these ideas with my whole community.
This will support YOU. And it will support YOUR CLIENTS.
The model you will learn has 3 phases – Chaos, Acceptance and the New Normal. As a leader, it's essential you identify which stage you're in, which stage your business is in and which stage your team is in.
You need to show up differently as a leader, in each stage. You need to make different decisions and take different actions, in each stage. And you must communicate differently with team members who are in another stage to you, otherwise you'll upset them and even lose them.
If you're a coach this is an incredible tool for you. And it's an excellent tool to guide and support your clients.
Episode 6: "Don't answer your clients questions..."
Today I’m coaching a former Navy SEAL. The job of a great coach isn’t to answer their clients questions. It’s to help create more powerful questions for them to live into.
Christopher has an interesting question and it’s tempting for me to answer it but I pull back to look for the bigger context.
In this short episode you get to see the power of coaching for insight. An insight can happen in a moment. And then your life is changed for ever...
Episode 5: "I was born for this..."
Coaching powerful people is interesting… because when they have an insight, there's nothing more you need to do. You don't need to help them create a 27 step action plan or to hold them accountable. They are good to go.
Matt is a powerful leader who knows how to support others, in challenging circumstances.
I coach him and – within 10 minutes – he has an insight that gets him so clear, he's good to go…
Episode 4: "High-Touch Vs. High-Tech"
If you do what everyone else is doing, right now, you'll get the same results as everyone else…
Shelley is a high-level leader but at her heart, she's a rebel. So, it's ESSENTIAL that she does things differently. But it's important that YOU do things differently, too.
Episode 3: "Leadership lessons from Barack Obama."
In 2007, Angela met a very inspiring man. A year later, she quit her job to help this young Senator, with an unusual name, run for President. People told her she was crazy.
When Barack Obama became President of the United States, she spent 7 years in the White House, as his personal aide.
In this coaching session, I break the coaching ‘rules’. I step into leadership. I tell her what I think.
I tell Angela to stop being selfish. It's time for her to share the leadership lessons she learned sitting next to and observing one of the most fascinating presidents in recent history…
What's the message that YOU are not sharing?
Episode 2: "I'm carrying the burden alone."
Imagine running a company where your clients are seniors and your business generation happens almost exclusively through live events. And then there's a pandemic…
Welcome to Catherine's world. She's exhausted, and it feels like she's carrying this burden alone.
Within 3 minutes of coaching, she has an insight that's so powerful, we both know we're there. Shortest podcast episode ever!
I tell our editor to cut and Catherine and I start to chat. And in those next 2 minutes, she has another really powerful insight. So I asked them to leave that in the recording.
When you coach around insight, everything can shift in a moment. Life looks one way, something happens, and then everything is different…
Bonus Episode: Excellent Decisions
For 21 years, Robert McPhee has been a trusted advisor to high level leaders, CEOs, Directors and Board members. His company is called Excellent Decisions.
He was Director Of Training for Jack Canfield Companies for almost 5 years. And he is a Founder/Founding Member of the Transformational Leadership Council and the Association of Transformational Leaders.
Robert invited me on his podcast and I said yes. But when we started the conversation, I switched things up on him... I said "Robert, I can do a good interview but my Zone of Genius is coaching high-level, successful leaders – like you. I am gifted in supporting the kind of people who don't need support. I see things most leaders can't see – and I am willing to say the things most people aren't willing to say. Let me coach you, live on your podcast..."
I know Robert is a gifted coach and leader because he only hesitated for a moment before he said yes...
Episode 1: "What's your biggest challenge?"
When times are challenging you only need to ask your clients a single question, “What's the biggest challenge you're facing right now?”
Join me, as I coach a former Vice President of a relationship marketing agency. She's also a board member, advisor and angel investor.
Learn how to create clients in challenging circumstances…
Episode 5: "What makes you different?"
You must not be afraid of the things that make you different.
In fact, what you imagine might repel people is often the very thing that has your clients seek you out and want to work with you...
Listen to me draw out Tutti's story. She's a fascinating woman.
And, as you listen, reflect on what makes YOU different..
Episode 4: The gifts in your struggles
Ashley had a 20 year career in marketing. She worked with large organizations such as the NBA and Amazon.
Great marketers are great story tellers. But our own story is so close to us that it's really hard to see.
Until today, Ashley had never seen the gifts in her struggles. I draw out her story to leave her with a really powerful way to tell the world who she is and what she does.
Episode 3: Serve, Serve, Serve
This episode is called Serve, Serve, Serve because that's how we will come through these trying times...
500 people from my community joined me live on a Zoom call, called Leading in Challenging Times. We recorded it and now you can join me as I share the best principles I've learned from over 2 decades of leadership; sometimes in very trying circumstances.
You'll hear me teach 14 concepts to support you to lead (yourself AND your clients):
- The importance of check engine lights…
- How to be your own best client…
- Helpers high – how it works and how it can help you…
- The power of love – how to build trust and show compassion…
- Setting your compass – values-based leadership…
- Leading by receiving…
- The importance of ritual…
- Stumbling on happiness…
- You've been here before…
- A power greater than yourself…
- Building your support team…
- The power of long-term thinking…
- Focus on your clients‘ clients…
Please message me at firstname.lastname@example.org to tell me your biggest insight – and how you will apply it. And please share this episode with a friend.
Much love. Rich
Episode 2: "You CAN'T do it..."
Chris Frolic was a really famous DJ in the 1990's. Later he built a business that made millions of dollars.
You’ll hear me draw out Chris' story. And you'll hear me give him 4 words that light him up and literally make him speechless.
As you listen, answer the questions for yourself. See if you can get to the heart of who you are and what you do...
Episode 1: "A story that makes you say, Wow!"
Corrine is an extremely successful entrepreneur. But it doesn't matter how successful you are, you can't see your own gifts.
I help Corrine see the impact she had had in her career and she is literally moved to silence. All she can say is "wow."
There is such power being able to draw out your clients' stories...
Intro: "A powerful story changes everything..."
I'm extraordinarily good at helping high level leaders become high level coaches. And I often see successful leaders struggle as they become coaches. You see, they often dismiss all their prior leadership experience.
In Season 4, I draw out my guests' stories in a way that empowers them to articulate who they are in the most powerful way possible.
Imagine you could tell stories so powerful that your clients say, Wow... Imagine you could look in the eyes of a client – and instead of feeling like a new coach – you could say, I've been doing this my entire life... Well, you can.
Enjoy Season 4.
Episode 11: "Hell yes. Hell no. Maybe"
Today I coached Catherine. Catherine is a member of 4PC, she is a top performer, she is an estate attorney by background, and she has a business that makes millions. She is really making an impact on people's lives, helping them create an amazing future for themselves and their children.
She has had a taste of coaching and loves it! But she is sucked into those things that drain her of energy in her business. So, I teach her a tool that I call "Hell yes. Hell No. Maybe."
It will transform her business, it will transform her leadership team, and it will transform the life of all of them as they get more and more away from the "hell nos" and more and more into the "hell yeses" for their life and their business.
I tell her a story too about another tool called "the avoid at all costs list," which is a game changer. She has this insight that has her say "wow," and then we are there.
Episode 10: "I made over $90 million in sales but I was struggling to get clients..."
Today's episode isn't a coaching session. It's a very honest conversation with one of my Protégés.
Before becoming a coach, Mark Silverman generated over $90 million in complex tech sales in the corporate world and worked at numerous rapid growth startups.
He sought me out as his coach and he became a member of my community. Mark is now making over $200K a year as a coach and working with dream clients.
His first book sold over 50,000 copies and he is working on his second. However, it definitely was not always like this.
Once he began working with me, he quite quickly created a 6-figure income but that didn't cover the expenses of his former lifestyle. And he went through quite a challenging time for a while.
Listen to the end and you’ll hear Mark share about the frightening moment when he realized he was spending more money from cashing in his 401(k) than from coaching income…
Episode 9: "How do you run 120 miles?"
This was fascinating.
In today's episode you are going to hear me coaching Angela. Angela used to work for the United Nations, for UNESCO and she is based in Paris.
She is a woman who has done extraordinary things in her life. She runs 180 Kilometer races, ultra marathons, almost 120 miles. She doesn't like to do things by halves.
Even when she is taking on a mission she can't take on just one, she takes on a number at the same time. I coach her around her next big mission.
It was really fun.
Episode 8: "Do you make your clients cry?"
I begin every coaching session with two secret beliefs:
1. You are far more powerful than you know. Especially if you've already accomplished things that impress most people.
2. Tears are a release of emotion. And if I can create a safe enough space, my clients will cry when they share things with me they never shared with another living soul.
I begin this coaching session with one of my favorite coaching questions: “What would make this an extraordinary conversation?”
Kristen's reply was intellectually engaging but I couldn't feel her. So, I know we need to dive deep...
Like all my clients, Kristen is a top performer with a track record of success. She’s a retired television executive who founded a non-profit that has brought clean water to over 100,000 people in developing countries.
And as I dive in, Kristen shares things with me that she’s never shared before. In fact, she’s moved to tears. She leaves the conversation with an insight that will make a massive impact in her life and in the lives of her clients.
As you listen to the conversation, pay attention to two things:
1. The moments of insight on my client's side.
2. The moments on my side where I choose when to dive deep. What do you notice about what I see, hear or feel that give me clues in which direction to go?
Please share your insights with me.
And let me know where you are more powerful than you know...
Episode 7: "A life changing phone call"
Today I'm coaching, Luisa. She is a member of 4PC, she is a consultant and she understands business at the highest levels. She wants to work with me on the idea of doing something fun and big and using her genius.
I tell her a story about the day I got a phone call that changed my life. This was a phone call that within 2 minutes I put the phone down and I knew I was committed to something that I had no idea how to make happen but I was IN no matter what.
I tell her this story and we find a way to turn our conversation into that phone call for her. She leaves this session with a sense of mission and a way to give back that has her on fire. She is full of gratitude and emotion. She has found her mission where nothing will stop her.
Episode 6: "A thousand dollar cheeseburger"
Oh, this was a fun episode and we went long and we went deep.
I'm coaching Shelley Paxton. Shelley is a member of 4PC, my community for extraordinary leaders. And, she is the former Chief Marketing Officer for Harley Davidson, one of the most iconic brands on the planet.
Our gift in the world we can do for others, but we can't do for ourselves. So, I work with Shelley on a number of things.
Her book is going to be published in January by Simon and Schuster. She is wondering how she crafts the funnel for her business.
But here's the thing, funnels, I don't like that word. It's too boring for me and Shelley is a rebel. She has written a book about being a rebel. We have to create a program that feels like a rebel for her. I start by putting a thousand dollar cheeseburger on her menu and then we play from there.
If you are crafting out a business and want to know what to put out as opportunities for people to work with you then this is really fun. Enjoy!
Episode 5: "Where do I find interesting people?"
Richard is a consultant and a coach who has worked in tech for 20 years. He works with fast moving business leaders who love complexity.
And he asks me, "where do I find these interesting people that I love to work with?"
I tell him, there are two answers to that question.
1. You can look for them and find the communities they hang out in.
2. Or, you can create the communities they hang out in. And, it's easier than you think.
There is a moment at the end of the coaching where you literally hear him say "hmmm."
That's the insight moment I know we are there! That's the moment he has had his insight. Next, he gets in his head a little bit about how he is going to make this happen and I have to calm him down. But that is the moment he knew he wanted to do this, the insight came, and we were there.
That's why I love to coach around insight. The moment they have an insight, their world changes.
Enjoy the episode.
Episode 4: "10 X $100K clients!"
I really enjoyed this episode. I'm coaching Eric, a member of Project Kairos.
Project Kairos is my community of high-level leaders, executives and entrepreneurs who want to do one thing and one thing alone: build a success and thriving coaching practice one conversation at a time.
Eric read The Prosperous Coach and really flew before he even began working with me. He now has 10 $100K clients which most coaches on the planet would aspire to have.
Except, sometimes success hurts. He is paying the price for the way he has created his business. He has all sorts of unique challenges because of the way he set his business up.
He wants my help to make $2M next year because he made $1M this year.
But I don't play that way.
Instead of helping people solve the problems they have, I want to give him a bigger problem to live into. I want to give him a bigger challenge so I give him a $20M challenge. He leaves full of inspiration and full of energy and excitement for what's coming next.
I slow him down with the idea that a goal is a place to come from, not a place to get to.
Episode 3: "What if your clients feel overwhelmed?"
This was a fun conversation.
Alexis is a member of 4PC, she worked in the movie business for a long time, she’s helped other people grow and scale their businesses and has created a coaching practice for five or six years that’s really flown.
She gets on the call and says, "Look, I know how you’re gonna begin, Rich. You’re gonna ask me this powerful question, ‘What would the next three years look like if it was amazing?’ And, I don’t know what the answer to that is."
So, I play with her and say, "Well, we don’t have to ask a powerful question. Let’s just have a chat."
And I was going to edit all that bit out, but I thought it would be fun if we leave that in.
So, you’ll actually hear in real time me chatting to Alexis before the call begins and then you hear me coaching.
So, you get just how real this is. There’s no setup here; it’s just me, in real time, having a real conversation. The insight she gets at the end is so powerful that it moves her to tears.
Episode 2: “I coach one of Einstein's relatives!"
David is a member of 4PC. He’s a successful entrepreneur and has been a coach for many years.
He wants my help and guidance to get his book out into the world because he feels stuck and afraid to ask people to buy it and to share it.
But I don’t play that way. I quickly see that he’s too in his head. This is a man who is literally related to Einstein. I get him back in his heart and I get him to a place where he feels so moved that he has the insight he needs.
Episode 1: “On the other side of burn out"
Ngan is a business owner who’s been successful in business for many years and she’s transitioning into being a coach.
She’s secretly burnt out and she doesn’t even know it. But I ask a question and I create the space where she opens up enough that she cries, and in that moment we both see what she really needs.
Successful leaders, successful entrepreneurs, and successful coaches are often running on empty and they can’t see it.
In this short conversation, Ngan has an insight that changes everything for her.
Episode 8: “What do you do?"
Today's a short episode where I'm going to tell you how to answer the question "What do you do?" We get it asked all the time and the answer should almost never be "I'm a Coach."
I'm going to tell you a story about one of my favorite writers about how to show up and be your unique self. And this entire episode is an introduction to the next season.
The people I coach in this season are members of Project Kairos, my community of high level leaders, former excecutives, former entrepreneurs who have come into coaching or are on their way into coaching. And members of 4PC, my community of high level leders who are up to something really big right now, they are on a big mission.
I let you be a fly on the wall as I coach these people week after week.
Enjoy today's episode where I tell you a story and how to answer the question "What do you do?" It's an overwhelming question and still to this day I get frozen sometimes when I get asked it. But there are very powerful ways to answer this question.
Episode 7: “Double your fees. Then double them again!"
Prior to becoming a coach, Kyle was a high flying executive who worked 80 hour weeks. Prior to becoming a coach, Aaron's career was focused on social justice. And to becoming a coach, Alex produced events that generated millions in revenue in the trade show field.
Today was an interesting conversation because the power in my entire neighborhood went out before I was able to wrap the episode! So, Kyle, Aaron, Alex and I jumped on a second call a whole week later.
By the end of these two conversations: I helped Alex identify his dream client; I helped Kyle start to dream about a mission so big that he could make a massive impact on the world; and I helped Aaron let go of being so serious and fear driven.
We thought we'd finished recording, when Kyle shared that after our first call, he'd doubled his rates. And – a little to his surprise – he'd kept getting yes'es! So, I gave him a secondary challenge, to double them again!!
Episode 6: “You selfish bastard..."
Rene had the courage to leave a 28 year successful corporate career, two years before her official retirement, to become a professional coach.
Dan has a background rehabilitating some of the most dangerous and violent criminal offenders in the world. He is now a professional coach, too.
Rene wanted permission to pursue her own path and Dan wanted to know why he was not doing what was most important to him. But a great coach doesn't have to answer the questions their clients ask.
Today, I tell stories and mess with their thinking. And in the silence you hear each of them have an insight which will ripple out into their future...
Episode 5: “It's meant to be hard"
Kacey worked for a decade as a professional opera singer and actor, on stages across the globe. She is now a high level executive coach, with clients at Google, at top TV networks and on Broadway.
Briony was a lawyer, living a big city life who appeared to have it all but on the inside she felt empty. She left it all to go on a journey of personal growth before setting up a coaching business to support high achievers – and those on their way.
In the first part of today's episode we take an inside look at a number of the secrets of extraordinary top performers. In particluar, "I have everything I ever wanted but I still feel empty..." and "I am acknowledged for all my successes but on the inside I feel lazy..."
In the second part of today's episode we talk about the fear that comes up when building a Word of Mouth business. Especially when we get online and we hear all the noise about how you're 'supposed' to build an online business and funnnels and lists, etc!
I share my own insight how my secret business plan for many years has been just 3 words...

Today, you'll hear just how human these 3 extraordinary top performers are. The brilliant researcher who forgets how brilliant she is. The finance wizard who was missing how to bring his genius to his own business. And the highly successful leader who was being held back by her fear of failure.

In todays coaching experience, I help Eric get in touch with his heart. I put Angela on a 90 day ban of doing anything that's less than a 10 out of 10. And I help Deborah handle her fears about how to sustain the momentum in her business. Each of them has a powerful insight moment when they get very still. The sound of insight is often silence...
Episode 2: “I believe in You"
Manjeet has been a consultant to some of Britain's top retailers for over a decade.
Jordan has won awards in the advertising industry for her work.
Both of them have transitioned into coaching. And what I do in this conversation is wake them both up to how powerful they are. There's a powerful insight moment that comes in the last few minutes of this conversation when I say these words to them both, "I believe in you..."

Episode 10: “Stop asking permission"
It's time to face the fear of whatever is stopping you. Most of the time what we're afraid of is what we imagine other people will think.
Yet the only person we REALLY have to worry about is our self. That is whose opinion is stopping us. And, if we can learn to ignore ourselves, we can do anything we want...
In this episode, Rich tells a short story by Dave Trott. And he sets the scene for Season Two of 1 Insight.
Episode 9: “The dark side of your gifts..."
Don't be tempted to buy into what your clients 'say' that they want. Go deep. Margaux was once in charge of the worldwide marketing strategy for an organization with a half a billion dollar revenue. So I didn't bite when she asked me to help her prioritize her actions! She had 1 Insight that caused her to go silent, when I gave her a powerful tool for speaking herself into the room.
Episode 8: “Your mission is to collect NOs..."
Chris is a forensic accountant by background. He's assembled, organized, and led international teams who have conducting high profile forensic accounting investigation across the globe. So I challenge her thinking and she has 1 Insight...
Episode 5: "You don't need clarity. You need space."
Marli is the Vice President of an International Pharmaceutical Company which manufactures products for very rare diseases. She's a very accomplished leader and heads up an international team of 60 people. She wanted me to help her get clarity on what's next for her. But I coach around insight and 1 Insight can change EVERYTHING. And as you'll hear, sometimes a life-changing insight can come in less than 5 minutes!
Episode 4: "You need to leave Facebook. It's killing you."
Erin is a former Director at two different billion dollar technology companies. She has a PhD in Social and Personality Psychology.
